If you can’t feel fluid, then top off the fluid through the hole.If it looks dirty (not pink), it is time to change your fluid. It is usually half-way up the side of the transmission. Your car will need to be secured on jack stands or a hoist. How to Check Your (Manual) Transmission FluidĬhecking the fluid level in a manual transmission is a little more complicated, as the car needs to be lifted while you do this. It only takes a moment to check your brake fluid too, while you’re underneath the hood. If the level is low, use a funnel and top off the fluid through the dipstick tube.Take the dipstick back out and check the level.Wipe the dipstick clean and re-insert it.If it looks dirty, you will need to have the fluid changed. Look at the fluid that is on the dipstick, and make sure that it is pink, and doesn’t have flecks of metal in it.
If your car uses FWD, the dipstick will be towards the front of the engine, usually on the driver side. If your car is an RWD model, you’ll find the dipstick towards the back of the engine, usually on the passenger side. Locate the correct dipstick (don’t confuse it with the oil dipstick!).Just make sure to do this while the engine is running and already warm.
